“XPeng’s 2024 AI Day: Introducing Iron the Humanoid Robot and Next-Gen EV Innovations”

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker XPeng has made a significant leap into robotics, unveiling its first humanoid robot, Iron, at its 2024 AI Day event. Known for its cutting-edge EVs, XPeng demonstrated its commitment to advancing AI-driven technologies that extend beyond automobiles.
Iron stands 5’8″ tall, weighs 154 pounds (70 kg), and is equipped with more than 60 joints and 200 degrees of freedom. These attributes allow it to perform complex tasks, including assembling intricate parts and walking, making it highly adaptable in industrial settings. Already integrated into XPeng’s production operations, Iron is involved in assembling the upcoming P7+ EV model, showcasing its practical application and versatility.
The robot is powered by XPeng’s specially designed Turing AI chip, which features a 40-core CPU. This chip is engineered for demanding AI tasks across various sectors, including robotics, automotive manufacturing, and even flying vehicles. According to XPeng, the Turing AI chip can handle AI models with 30 billion parameters and completed over 2,700 functional verifications within 40 days—three times faster than the industry standard. This exceptional processing power allows Iron to think, adapt, and make human-like decisions, enhancing its flexibility and operational effectiveness.
Iron is more than just an industrial tool; XPeng envisions its future as a personal assistant in diverse settings. The robot could assist with administrative tasks and customer service in offices, retail spaces, and even private homes. By expanding its focus beyond factory floors, XPeng aims to compete with other tech giants such as Tesla, which has developed the Optimus robot with similar capabilities.
XPeng’s 2024 AI Day event also featured other technological milestones, including the unveiling of the Kunpeng super-electric system. This advanced system is built on an 800V high-voltage silicon carbide platform and includes a 5C ultra-charging AI battery paired with a hybrid silicon carbide coaxial electric drive. The system maximizes energy conversion, increasing EV efficiency and extending range. Notably, the Kunpeng system can add approximately 0.62 miles (1 km) of range per second, reaching 80% charge in just 12 minutes with XPeng’s S5 liquid-cooled ultra-fast charging station.
The AI-driven Kunpeng system also includes an “AI Battery Doctor” feature, which continuously monitors battery health, extending its lifespan by up to 30%. This innovation highlights XPeng’s dedication to integrating smart technology for enhanced vehicle performance and user convenience.
XPeng’s ambitions don’t stop with robotics and EVs. The company has plans to release hybrid flying cars by 2026, signaling its commitment to becoming a global tech leader. With intentions to expand into 60 countries by next year, XPeng aims to set new benchmarks in AI, robotics, and transportation, positioning itself as a pioneer in next-generation technologies.
